Our story

Rent-a-Writer Ltd was founded by Richard Dyter, a graduate of Oxford University who learnt about advertising with Procter & Gamble. He became a professional writer in 1995.

Writing can be a very solitary profession. This suits many writers – but not all the time. Richard Dyter realised the need for some sort of network that could support individual writers without stifling them. The result is Rent-a-Writer Ltd.

Rent-a-Writer Ltd aims to:

  • serve clients; and
  • serve writers.

Both of these goals are equally important. We meet the needs of clients to the best of our ability, and we help writers to earn money for themselves and their families.

From its origins in advertising, Rent-a-Writer now offers broad services in writing your ideas in clear words.

Important points in our story are:

1995 Rent-a-Writer (then trading as ‘Richard Dyter Freelance Writer’) gains a commission to write a How To manual for Christians to lead school assemblies.

1996-2000 The number of clients grows steadily to include: Procter & Gamble, Nissan Motor Manufacturing, the Go-Ahead Group, the University of Sunderland, the Drugs Prevention Advisory Service (Northern region), and a number of other organisations based in the North East of England.

2000 Sage Software UK Ltd becomes Rent-a-Writer’s largest client and commissions large numbers of brochures and direct mail campaigns.

2002 Rent-a-Writer moves to new premises in Newcastle to accommodate increasing numbers of associate writers.

2003 Rent-a-Writer wins contracts to write for the Home Office’s Drugs Strategy Directorate.

2003 Rent-a-Writer Ltd develops the World English initiative and begins to work for the Central Office of Information and other parts of the British Government.

2004 Rent-a-Writer wins new public sector clients including the Learning & Skills Council, Housing Market Renewal Pathfinders, the Criminal Justice Intervention Programme and a number of Drug and Alcohol Action Teams. Within the private sector, we extend our work for IT-related clients including TSG (Technology Services Group).
